data source: box office mojo

Sony Pictures’ ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2‘ was the number one movie this weekend. This was expected because it was the only family animated film of theaters, and it will remain the only one throughout October. ‘Cloudy 2′ opening was more successful than the original. Part one, earned $30.3 million (3,000 screens), and part two earned $35 million (4,000 screens). On a separate note, Ron Howard’s ‘Rush‘ although it had positive reviews, only took in $10 million. Maybe it will pick up next weekend. However, the race will be tough because ‘Gravity‘ and ‘Captain Philips‘ hit theaters.

For a second week in a row, Lee’s Daniels biopic has ruled the box office. The good news do not stop here because Oscar buzz is already surrounding the film. I wouldn’t be surprised if Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey take come the coveted golden boy. Whitaker won an Oscar for ‘The Last King of Scotland‘, and ‘Winfrey’ was nominated for ‘The Color Purple‘. Interestingly, ‘We Are the Millers’, have been fighting the number two position and are pretty close to the $100 million mark. The two movies which opened this weekend, ‘The Mortal Instruments‘ and ‘The World’s End‘ landed in third and fourth place respectably. Even though it had good reviews, ‘You’re Next’ Open in 7th place.

Well, thanks to an inspiring story and the impressive Oprah power, The Weinstein Co.’s “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” was the number one movie this weekend. Some people, including me, thought ‘Kick-Ass 2‘ was going to be the winner, especially being a movie targeted to late teens before school starts. I guess the word spread it wasn’t as good as the original. The raunchy comedy ‘We’re the Millers‘ gave up a good fight and climbed to the number 2 position.

August 9-11, 2013 Weekend*

I guess this is not the summer for science fiction movies. ‘After Earth‘ was a huge flop and ‘Pacific Rim‘ to date has gross only $100 million domestically, although its international gross is $350 million. And now ‘Elysium‘ opened with $30 million.

According to Variety.com “Elysium’s” debut was also down nearly 20% from director Neill Blomkamp’s last feature, “District 9,” which opened to $37.4 million in 2009 and was made for one quarter the budget ($30 million).

Other summer movies that were not as successful as expected are: ‘R.I.P.D’ and ‘The Lone Ranger’.

Let’s see what awaits for us next weekend.

Or Woody Allen kick his ass?

Weekend Box Office Results: July 28

source: boxofficemojo

It comes as no surprise The Wolverine slashed its competition. As a matter of fact, it was the only opening film within the first five spots at the box office. What is unexpected, it only made $55 million! It is not a poor number, but according to boxofficemojo, ‘with 3D premiums inflating ticket prices, The Wolverine had the lowest initial attendance yet for the franchise’. Sure, it is not Iron Man 3, but its audiences are different. Iron Man 3 is more oriented to broader ones and The Wolverine older male demographics. Other movies such as Pacific Rim and Red 2 continue to fall; while Despicable 2 stills holds within the top five movies.

Woody Allen’s Bluejasmin opened in a limited release (6 screens) with a respectable $613,000. That makes it the number 1 movie per screen with an $102,167; average vs Wolverine’s $14,016 per screen. We could say Woody kick Wolverine’s butt.

SOURCE: BOX OFFICE MOJO

*NEW RELEASES

Yes, it is true, two kiddie sequel defeated the anticipated robots vs. monsters mayhem film. But what get wrong? Is this bad new for Guillermo del Toro? I do not think so. Here is what happened:

1) Kids can not get enough of the minions, and Pacific Rim is a PG-13 movie parents might not be so keen to take their little kids to see it.

2) Oddly enough, people wanted to see more of the star power of Grown-Ups cast. Apparently the peeing moose trailer helped.

3) Pacific Rim has a very specific demographics. Fan boys rushed to see it on Thursday sneak shows. However, it does not has famous actors mainstream audiences can relate too.

4) Pacific Rim will recuperate internationally. It made $20 more in only 7 countries, next weekend it will be released in dozens more.

Let’s see what happens next weekend. Probably Despicable Me 2 will pass the half billion mark and the Lone Ranger sink even further.

* just released **source: box office mojo

Despicable Me 2 conquered dramatically the 4 of July weekend box-office. A close race was being predicted between the Minions and The Lone Ranger, but the results prove quite the opposite. Is it audiences are not interested in cowboys films (Cowboys and Aliens)? Is it because it is a popular character back in the early 60s (unrelatable today)?

For now, we know two things: there will be a Despicable 3 (or a Minion spinoff) and unlike Pirates of the Caribbean, there will not be a Lone Ranger series.

Just imagine, Despicable Me 2 budget is 71 million and in one week it made $300 million.

Pixar does it again. A number one movie two weeks in a row. The Heat gross a respectable $40 million, as always the challenge is next weekend. Will it drop 40%? Since it is the 4 of July weekend is a tough battle. World War Z, still is doing well at the box office. Probably it is Brad Pitt strongest opening ever.

The results come as no surprise. The movie is packed with jaw dropping car chases as well as one very charismatic assembled cast; lets not forget a hip soundtrack that appeals the target. I wonder what George Miller is preparing for Fury Road (Mad Max remake). I hope it has the same spectacular chases but without the commercial script or urban music Fast and Furious 6 has. After Earth came on third place. It seems like M. Night Shyamalan has another bomb in his portfolio. Will Fast Furious conquer next weekend? Only time will tell.

What a fantastic weekend it was for Oz the Great and Powerful. Domestically it grossed $82 million and with an international box office is a total of $150 million. Even with its $200+ budget, is a good sign. Apparently the not-favorable reviews did not affect the audiences. Disney already has plans to produce a sequel, but would not that be The Wizard of Oz?
